TIPS FOR SUSTAINABILITY + FAVOURITE GREEN SMOOTHIE

GO GREEN! A report issued Monday by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), says the planet will reach the crucial threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels by as early as 2030, precipitating the risk of extreme drought, wildfires, floods and food shortages for hundreds of millions of people. Governments should be stepping in, but sadly they aren’t. Their profits and power mean too much to them. So we the people need to push them and that starts by us making changes. Vote with your dollar. Lead by example. We need to do this for future generations to come.

Here are ways that each of us can try to help:

  1. Go plant based, or at least reduce your animal product consumption as much as you can. This is incredibly important as this is one of the top polluters and is the number one cause for ocean dead zones, rain forest destruction, wildlife loss, etc. 

  2. Travel more responsibly. Try to leave as little of a mark as you can when you go.

  3. Yes avoiding straws is good, but reducing our overall plastic consumption is crucial. Watch A Plastic Ocean to learn more. Going grocery shopping? Bring reusable bags. Going to get a smoothie? Bring a mason jar. These choices might seem small and mundane but they are important especially if more and more people have this shift in awareness. 

  4. Carpool. Drive less. Bike and walk more. 

  5. Buy less in general - but one important one to focus on is the clothing industry as it is one of the top polluters. Watch The True Cost to learn more. Try to only buy when you need to, thrift shop, do clothing swaps with friends, and if buying try to support more environmentally friendly materials and stores. 

  6. Educate yourself as much as possible so you can vote for people who are going to make change. Education is also key for yourself and helping family and friends get on board too. 

  7. Fossil fuels are a big part of our life - but renewable energy is extremely important right now. We must start supporting the switch over. 

This is not about just you or I anymore. This is about generations to come. We collectively must start to do this. I know we can.


While we are talking about “going green”, here is my favourite green smoothie recipe:

Makes: 2 servings

What you’ll need:

1 large handful of spinach or mixed greens
1 cup soy milk (my favourite plant milk and the most nutritionally complete)
2 frozen bananas
1 tbsp natural peanut butter
Ginger (fresh or powder)
Cinnamon
Drop of vanilla extract

Extras but not necessary:
Pranin organic iron powder
Pranin organic b vitamins powder
OR vanilla protein powder

Directions:

  1. Add all ingredients to a high speed blender. I use the Vitamix A2300 and add the milk in first and then the rest of the ingredients.

  2. Blend until smooth.

  3. Share with a friend, your partner or drink it all yourself! Enjoy!
